The program is simple enough; a residence for an artist set in an idyllic forest landscape. But the 'residence', as it were, serves dual private and public functions; it is private in the conventional sense that it is a home and workplace for the artist, but public in that there is an exhibition space on within the architecture where public events are hosted by the artist.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Like the Bordeaux House, the program is split across three levels: a lower floor set into the earth with a distinctive skylight on the opposite side to provide natural light; the middle floor serves as the exhibition space; and the upper floor, bound by an inverted u-beam and truss frame element, is reserved for domestic and private programmatic needs.</span></span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WuCchgUwRwI/Tb6HFrtgTEI/AAAAAAAAAXQ/E-mIZix2NPM/s1600/IMG_1477.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WuCchgUwRwI/Tb6HFrtgTEI/AAAAAAAAAXQ/E-mIZix2NPM/s400/IMG_1477.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602063518198156354" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SdlZLz3J0a0/Tb6HASFhUGI/AAAAAAAAAXI/sGbAtQl5QSs/s1600/IMG_1478.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SdlZLz3J0a0/Tb6HASFhUGI/AAAAAAAAAXI/sGbAtQl5QSs/s400/IMG_1478.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602063425420218466" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MCe9-K1k3Xg/Tb6G6mGV3BI/AAAAAAAAAXA/uvMWm4_U6BE/s1600/IMG_1479.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MCe9-K1k3Xg/Tb6G6mGV3BI/AAAAAAAAAXA/uvMWm4_U6BE/s400/IMG_1479.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602063327713156114" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-inFtFELy5Gc/Tb6Gz441AII/AAAAAAAAAW4/4QHlCkshMJg/s1600/IMG_1480.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-inFtFELy5Gc/Tb6Gz441AII/AAAAAAAAAW4/4QHlCkshMJg/s400/IMG_1480.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602063212497666178" border="0" /></a>James Gitohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06332036924043808416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5179496018683512325.post-311311898511262052011-05-02T19:25:00.021+10:002011-05-02T20:22:23.834+10:00ARCH1201 Project 2 Iterative Studies - Set 3 - FINAL<span style="font-family:arial;font-size:100%;">This is the third and final set in a three-part series of iterative studies exploring the relationship between program + specific aspects of architectural articulation in Rem Koolhaas' Bordeaux H<span style="font-family:arial;">ouse.</span></span><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;font-size:100%;" ><span style="font-style: italic;">Study 1</span>: The relationship between formal devices; i.e. facades, openings, geometries, etc. and program - that is, the relationship between overall form/appearance and program.</span><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:100%;">This final model is essentially a precise</span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:arial;"> three-dimensional map of the facades, openings, and geometries sans the three floor plates. Viewing the entire architectural composition free of the floor planes allows the delicate and precise relationships between the facades and openings across the three levels to be explicitly made visually-apparent. It is made visible that certain combinations of facades and openings frame,in spatial terms, the context of programmatic functions; intimate functions on the top level, free-form living functions in the middle floor, and pragmatic domesticity in the lowest floor. The overall appearance is dictated by an interplay of three distinct striations of facade and opening types in sympathy with the mode of living intended by the architectural program. </span></span><br /></div><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:78%;"><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V8e4t3S8RuY/Tb58KNpQKsI/AAAAAAAAAWw/H5kazjaD_ok/s1600/IMG_1485.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V8e4t3S8RuY/Tb58KNpQKsI/AAAAAAAAAWw/H5kazjaD_ok/s400/IMG_1485.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602051501398698690" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W8m1vJexe-Y/Tb58A-YK3SI/AAAAAAAAAWo/1jnYdJPlL44/s1600/IMG_1486.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-W8m1vJexe-Y/Tb58A-YK3SI/AAAAAAAAAWo/1jnYdJPlL44/s400/IMG_1486.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602051342681693474" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:78%;"><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x6nxfr1l-t4/Tb57xUCRJoI/AAAAAAAAAWg/0B0_pe0yIsg/s1600/IMG_1487.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x6nxfr1l-t4/Tb57xUCRJoI/AAAAAAAAAWg/0B0_pe0yIsg/s400/IMG_1487.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602051073617503874" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:78%;"><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uiGOSLOhkbw/Tb57iApomqI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/8Kj39NNLFmM/s1600/IMG_1489.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uiGOSLOhkbw/Tb57iApomqI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/8Kj39NNLFmM/s400/IMG_1489.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602050810715871906" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3K_yVrwWWQM/Tb57oScgA5I/AAAAAAAAAWY/UEltXtUgUMk/s1600/IMG_1488.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3K_yVrwWWQM/Tb57oScgA5I/AAAAAAAAAWY/UEltXtUgUMk/s400/IMG_1488.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602050918571836306" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2DaHO3HNBhQ/Tb57Zm4ga2I/AAAAAAAAAWI/noLBASFi23k/s1600/IMG_1490.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2DaHO3HNBhQ/Tb57Zm4ga2I/AAAAAAAAAWI/noLBASFi23k/s400/IMG_1490.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602050666359974754" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" ><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-style: italic;">Study 2: </span>Psychological relationships between different zones of use.</span></span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family:arial;">The architectural portfolio of Rem Koolhaas and OMA is distinct for its often-explicit articulation of program. This is true both for large- and small-scale projects, as well as across a range of sectors such as residential and commercial; interesting examples include the Seattle Central Library (2004), CCTV Building (2008), and Villa Dall'Ava (1991). The Bordeaux House also exhibits a distinctive architectural articulation of different zones of use - that is to say, programmatic function - that produce exciting possibilities for psychological interpretation. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">The model below uses bold colours to emphasize the different zones of use, monochromatic geometric forms to represent the critical circulatory elements that link the zones of use, as well as thin frame-like elements to explicitly define the important voids in the architecture. Immediately, a range of psychological relationships can be appreciated: the structured architectural program defined for the parents standing in ordered opposition to the whimsical treehouse-like program produced for the children; another, the domesticity of the lowest floor sitting at the bottom of a visual hierarchy of programmatic functions; and the red zone, the 'heart of the architecture', situated in a delicate balance bound by contrasting programmatic zones of use as well as an explicit vertical void situated in the geometric centre of the architecture.</span><br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zBSUX5S9ZVE/Tb55gzE9WlI/AAAAAAAAAVg/OubcjptHQaI/s1600/IMG_1491.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zBSUX5S9ZVE/Tb55gzE9WlI/AAAAAAAAAVg/OubcjptHQaI/s400/IMG_1491.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602048590869256786" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-grKM9G7AS9k/Tb55YvW6jKI/AAAAAAAAAVY/l1BkiHuSfOs/s1600/IMG_1492.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-grKM9G7AS9k/Tb55YvW6jKI/AAAAAAAAAVY/l1BkiHuSfOs/s400/IMG_1492.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602048452431875234" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pK2zrhvcUp0/Tb55RuOcfRI/AAAAAAAAAVQ/Lx9dUlRNbpc/s1600/IMG_1493.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pK2zrhvcUp0/Tb55RuOcfRI/AAAAAAAAAVQ/Lx9dUlRNbpc/s400/IMG_1493.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602048331868830994" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ca-S88MUuWo/Tb55KNMgVMI/AAAAAAAAAVI/b1LYJ-wVQ7s/s1600/IMG_1494.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ca-S88MUuWo/Tb55KNMgVMI/AAAAAAAAAVI/b1LYJ-wVQ7s/s400/IMG_1494.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602048202743239874" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;font-size:100%;" ><span style="font-style: italic; ">Study 3</span>: The relationship between structural strategy and program. </span><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:100%;"><br /><br />This abstract model was intended to convey, in elemental and visually-exaggerated terms, the character and 'personality' of the structural system; a bold system of peculiar geometric and engineering elements that liberate the floor plan from structural functions. The upper floor has a clear sense of privacy, with vertical and horizontal elements separating private zones between members of the same family. The middle floor, the most fascinating of the three, is a sublime architectural environment bounded by glass and a minimal set of metal vertical panels. It is a transitional area, caught between the upper and lower floors, yet its simple materiality and freeform plan invites the individual to stop and consider why this floor seems so different from the other two. Finally the lower floor, cut into the earth, has a much more explicit relationship between solid-void to articulate the variety of domestic programmatic functions one would expect to occur here; cooking and cleaning, storage and utility, dining, and watching the television. It is the least romantic floor, inviting the inhabitants to look elsewhere for a more meaningful architectural environment; either of the two upper floors would be suitable.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-giGwdQJYJSA/TaOzEka2m3I/AAAAAAAAAVA/tPpMZtc0yTE/s1600/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-04-12%2Bat%2B11.58.34%2BAM.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-giGwdQJYJSA/TaOzEka2m3I/AAAAAAAAAVA/tPpMZtc0yTE/s400/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-04-12%2Bat%2B11.58.34%2BAM.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594512053201443698" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >Study 3</span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >: The relationship between structural strategy and program.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">This analytical drawing attempts to understand the significance of the unique structural system by highlighting it within its architectural context and explicitly connecting the visual imagery with a keyword related to the human structural anatomy. In this way, the structural architecture is 'personified', allowing the program to be read more clearly; an architectural proposition that seeks to liberate the inhabitant from his own disabilities. Another consequence is that the floor plates, once again, can be read as floating elements within the overall program; their programmatic function is freed from structural concerns, producing exciting possibilities for a pure marriage between form and function.</span><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ztYU1Lar9yg/TaOzBGDWMII/AAAAAAAAAU4/e1gc1WmxYNE/s1600/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-04-12%2Bat%2B11.58.07%2BAM.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 292px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ztYU1Lar9yg/TaOzBGDWMII/AAAAAAAAAU4/e1gc1WmxYNE/s400/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-04-12%2Bat%2B11.58.07%2BAM.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594511993510178946" border="0" /></a>James Gitohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06332036924043808416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5179496018683512325.post-9986673410850196522011-04-05T21:20:00.013+10:002011-05-02T20:23:11.428+10:00ARCH1201 Project 2 Iterative Studies - Set 1<span style="font-family:arial;">This is the first set in a three-part series of iterative studies exploring the relationship between program + specific aspects of architectural articulation in Rem Koolhaas' Bordeaux House.</span><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" ><span style="font-style: italic;">Study 1</span>: The relationship between formal devices; i.e. facades, openings, geometries, etc. and program - that is, the relationship between overall form/appearance and program.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">This is an interesting architectural aspect to explore because of the rich diversity in facades and openings present in the Bordeaux House. In the initial exploratory study below, the three distinct horizontal striations of facade types are explicitly expressed.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">By delineating the facade types so explicitly, the architecture's program as 'three houses stacked on top of each other' can be read plainly.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oko7oA_2srY/TZr8EXy_l0I/AAAAAAAAAUg/wo8hFFm2A28/s1600/formal%2Bdevices.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 278px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oko7oA_2srY/TZr8EXy_l0I/AAAAAAAAAUg/wo8hFFm2A28/s400/formal%2Bdevices.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5592059039371466562" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >Study 2</span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >: The psychological relationship between different zones of use (programmatic functions).</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;font-family:arial;" >This is an interesting architectural aspect to explore because the Bordeaux House is famous for being satisfying to its inhabitants beyond aesthetic and technological contexts. A rich interplay between different programmatic zone types creates a diverse range of psychological experiences. In the study below, the focus is on the relationship between the two 'separated' houses (one for the adults, the other for the children) on the top floor of the house. Their physical separation is masked by the contiguous beam that wraps around that floor, but is explicitly revealed in this illustration. The vertical circulation is mirrored; an elevator platform and cantilevered staircase on the left, and a spiral staircase in a circular column on the right. On the left, there is a glass open-air balcony; on the right, the most distinctive opening is a peculiar circular opening in the facade. Psychologically, the two opposin</span><span style="font-family: arial;font-family:arial;" >g zones affords two distinctly different experiences within the same architectural context; an element of the 'parti' for the program was to create a complex building, because it would be the extent of the world for its disabled inhabitant; the distinct psychological variations between spaces is evidence of this expressed in architectural terms.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-psZESd4BD6s/TZr71cVBRpI/AAAAAAAAAUY/AW1oSftKs_U/s1600/psychological%2Brelationships.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 283px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-psZESd4BD6s/TZr71cVBRpI/AAAAAAAAAUY/AW1oSftKs_U/s400/psychological%2Brelationships.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5592058782889887378" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >Study 3</span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" >: The relationship between structural strategy and program.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">In the intial exploratory study, a simple model seeks to simplify - in the most basic of elements - the architectural strategy of the house. The model aims to express two observations: the bizarre structural system as an artform/sculpture in itself; and the spatial freedom afforded by floor plates free of structural columns or beams. The appearance of such an architectural composition is wonderfully-liberating and comforting all at the same time.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">The model below illustrates the bizarre structural system, as well as the freedom this affords the floor plates. A glass threshold separates the courtyard from the working interiors of this lowest floor; a space characterized by a wall geometry that synthesizes rectilinear with curvilinear elements. On this floor the vertical circulatory system terminates; the staircase to the rear of the elevator; the elevator; the staircase to the middle floor; and the circular staircase. It is the architectural interface through which the building's occupants begin their interaction with the building.</span><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8WPiXeOBlHQ/TYfyhXlPT3I/AAAAAAAAATo/VyCl5D_2CvQ/s1600/Bordeaux%2BHouse-A3%2BGround%2BFloor.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 283px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8WPiXeOBlHQ/TYfyhXlPT3I/AAAAAAAAATo/VyCl5D_2CvQ/s400/Bordeaux%2BHouse-A3%2BGround%2BFloor.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5586700517856202610" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Middle Floor</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">The middle floor is the most peculiar of them all. I have explored an architecture that would be near-impossible to reproduce in reality. That is the essence of power - to make the impossible, possible; to convince the masses, for a fleeting second, that reality is what you dictate, and not what it is in reality.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZcSe7gwUI/AAAAAAAAAMU/kmtq_ML7CUM/s1600/screen2.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 190px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZcSe7gwUI/AAAAAAAAAMU/kmtq_ML7CUM/s320/screen2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482671068980232514" border="0" /></a><br />Parts of my architecture express a resounding uniformity in form and function. The impact of power upon those whom it is impressed upon is magnified when it is reinforced by repetition. The first Roman emperor, Augustus, had his likeness plastered across all corners of the empire in a powerful example of the dissemination of the imperial cult. Today we know that image as the Prima Porta Augustus.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZcHVHE9RI/AAAAAAAAAMM/0akV5ue4biY/s1600/screen3.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 190px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZcHVHE9RI/AAAAAAAAAMM/0akV5ue4biY/s320/screen3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482670877365826834" border="0" /></a><br />The two elevators in mid-motion. The offices of Keller and Merkel serve a double function as elevators to take them to the meeting area. I have chosen to model the movement of the clients continuously in the context of their offices because their power is transmitted far beyond their capacity as individual human beings; their power also resonates in the ideas, works, people, projects, productions, beliefs that surround them as they go about their business. I have simulated this by encapsulating their in-game movements entirely within their offices.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZb7DDq9hI/AAAAAAAAAME/DukAdoqejGE/s1600/screen4.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 190px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZb7DDq9hI/AAAAAAAAAME/DukAdoqejGE/s320/screen4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482670666361271826" border="0" /></a><br />I have chosen to use dominant rectangular shapes and ambitious linear forms in my architecture because they have been hallmark features of 'powerful' architecture throughout the ages - the roads and basilicas of Rome; the Gothic cathedrals of medieval Europe; the great transnational railways of the Industrial era; and the soaring glass and steel edifices of the modern capitalist world.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZbwqG6dAI/AAAAAAAAAL8/zdxExzsLmG4/s1600/screen5.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 190px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZbwqG6dAI/AAAAAAAAAL8/zdxExzsLmG4/s320/screen5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482670487865291778" border="0" /></a><br />To the left is Angela Merkel's office, modelled directly on the real-world office building of the German Chancellor - the Bundeskanzleramt, in Berlin, nearby to the Reichstag. To the right is the office of Helen Keller; it is based on the 'Pile of Boxes' architecture proposed in Tianjin, China. It also resembles a stack of books, reflecting Keller's significant role as an author.James Gitohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06332036924043808416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5179496018683512325.post-29943262243726069702010-06-15T02:23:00.001+10:002010-06-15T21:47:57.243+10:00Final Submission Exp3 - Crysis WarsCrysis Wars sandbox files - Level folder and Objects folder<br /><br /><a href="http://www.filefront.com/16748103/z3219442b_levels.zip">Levels folder - 95MB</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.filefront.com/16748161/z3219442_Objects.zip">Objects folder - 9MB</a><br /><br />Also I would like to explain how my elevators work in Crysis.<br /><br />Essentially there are two phases of my in-game animations - the first is the arrival stage, where Keller and Merkel are taken to and arrive at the dining table; the second is the departure stage, where Keller and Merkel leave the dining table and return to the bridge.<br /><br />These two phases are triggered in-game by pressing 'p' and 'n', respectively.<br /><br />When 'p' is pressed for the first time, two elevator shafts rise out of the water and move skyward to connect with the offices of Keller and Merkel in the bridge architecture. Meanwhile, a large narrow platform containing the dining table slides out of the nearby terrain horizontally to form a cantilever stretching out over the water.<br /><br />The offices of Keller and Merkel are in fact the elevators, as well. Once the elevator shafts have fully extended and connected with the offices, the offices will descend along the shaft down to the bottom of the valley. Once they arrive at the cantilevered platform with the dining table, the first phase of the animations - the arrival - is completed.<br /><br />When 'n' is subsequently pressed, the elevator / offices of Keller and Merkel ascend the elevator shafts and return to their positions in the bridge architecture above. At the same time, the cantilevered platform containing the dining table retracts back into the nearby terrain to be concealed. Once the two offices have returned to their original positions, the two elevator shafts will disconnect and retract back into the water. Once they are concealed, the second phase of the animations - the departure - is completed.<br /><br />While in-game, please do not press 'n' after 'p' until all features of the architecture have come to a complete stationary halt. The animations utilize simple delay timers that will become unbalanced if the different keys are pressed too quickly.<br /><br />Also it is important to note, as previously mentioned, that the architecture for the meeting space in the valley and the accompanying dining table is not readily visible when the Crysis environment is first loaded. That aspect of the architecture is concealed, and will not be revealed until after the animations for the elevator is initiated. I have decided to model the dining table and meeting area as transitional and non-permanent because it reflects well the nature of 'the meeting of power' in the modern age - world leaders can meet in a multitude of different places nowadays; distinctly different from the age when people travelled huge distances to appear at the courts of the emperors of China and the kings of Europe.James Gitohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06332036924043808416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5179496018683512325.post-2189433853962793042010-06-15T02:21:00.002+10:002010-06-15T21:11:31.310+10:00Final Submission Exp3 - Sketchup Model<a href="http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=5f3877c35a91cda8c20290d30000de50">Completed Sketchup model</a><br /><br />The bridge and elevator architecture was built primarily in Crysis Sandbox, with Google Sketchup used primarily for applying object textures and constructing the various component parts of the Crysis architecture.<br /><br />However I have provided a rough translation of my in-Crysis architecture in Google Sketchup as another way of approaching an interpretation of my architecture.<br /><br /><iframe src="http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/mini?mid=5f3877c35a91cda8c20290d30000de50&etyp=sw&width=400&height=300" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" frameborder="0" height="300" scrolling="no" width="400"></iframe>James Gitohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06332036924043808416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5179496018683512325.post-40193633956706700512010-06-15T02:21:00.001+10:002010-06-15T02:21:34.474+10:00Peer reviewComing soon ~James Gitohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06332036924043808416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5179496018683512325.post-20494762023271294282010-06-15T02:20:00.002+10:002010-06-15T21:09:14.825+10:00The 36 custom textures for exp3-Linear- -Rotational- -Scalar Translation-<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZsnNIZA2I/AAAAAAAAANs/7O8odsH2agI/s1600/scan0001.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 291px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZsnNIZA2I/AAAAAAAAANs/7O8odsH2agI/s400/scan0001.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482689017165710178" border="0" /></a><br />-Transition- -Orientation- -Path-<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZsmt8PpGI/AAAAAAAAANk/bVneviSyUw8/s1600/scan0002.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 291px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZsmt8PpGI/AAAAAAAAANk/bVneviSyUw8/s400/scan0002.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482689008793265250" border="0" /></a>James Gitohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06332036924043808416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5179496018683512325.post-21285275563335482882010-06-15T02:20:00.001+10:002010-06-15T21:13:14.221+10:00More Sandbox draft images<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZdjJ83MdI/AAAAAAAAANM/Xq-tuY-lvGU/s1600/draft2.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 190px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZdjJ83MdI/AAAAAAAAANM/Xq-tuY-lvGU/s320/draft2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482672454918156754" border="0" /></a><br />Experimenting with a curved solution to connecting the two offices and two disconnected spans of the bridge.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZdita_v1I/AAAAAAAAANE/RhqBp51XYpc/s1600/draft4.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 190px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__pFW7jXaRlE/TBZdita_v1I/AAAAAAAAANE/RhqBp51XYpc/s320/draft4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482672447259918162" border="0" /></a><br />The final solution used to connect the two ends of the bridge, as well as the cantilever platform that supports the meeting area that the two clients will later occupy.James Gitohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06332036924043808416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5179496018683512325.post-47891668253209121952010-06-15T02:19:00.000+10:002010-06-15T21:16:54.893+10:00More precedents for exp3More architectural precedents that helped me explore the sort of architecture I wanted to construct and convey.<br /><br /><br />Below: the new Westfield Sydney redevelopment.
